A Norwegian man woke on Thursday morning to find a container ship on his doorstep.
The 862-teu NCL Salten (built 2002) had run aground overnight in his front garden on a fjord near Trondheim.
And bemused resident Johan Helberg had slept through the whole thing.
Photos showed the bow of the Cyprus-flagged feeder vessel about two metres from the front door.
The reason for the grounding of the 135-metre ship is not yet known.
Helberg only found out about his unwanted visitor when a perturbed neighbour phoned him, having given up ringing his doorbell.
“The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don’t like to open,” Helberg told television channel TV2.
AFP reported his neighbour, Jostein Jorgensen, as saying he was roused at around 5 am local time by the sound of a ship heading at full speed towards land and immediately ran to Helberg’s house.
“I was sure that he was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life. I rang the doorbell many times and nothing … And it was only when I called him on the phone that I managed to contact him,” Jorgensen told TV2.
Several hours later, the massive red and green vessel remained stuck beside the wooden dwelling.
“It’s a very bulky new neighbour but it will soon go away,” an amused Helberg said.
None of the 16 crew members were injured in the incident, the cause of which is being investigated by Norwegian police, AFP said.
The vessel is operated by North Sea Container Line in Norway, which has been contacted for comment.
AIS data showed it remained aground on Thursday afternoon.
The ship has insurance cover through NorthStandard in the UK.
The NCL Salten has a clean port state control detention record.
A safety inspection in Norway in February revealed three deficiencies related to fire-fighting equipment, lifebuoys and the cleanliness of the cold room.
